Cashier mistake

Hi there, I was at the bank today depositing an amount (say £7000 - but not disclosing the exact figure) and the cashier entered the amount as £8000. I only realized when I got home and went back to the branch to get this checked and rectified. It is now corrected back to £7000. I was just wondering should I have just kept my mouth shut and took the extra £1000? What would have happened if I didn't say anything? It is after all a big bank and I don't think I would feel guilt pocketing the extra £1000. I feel a little bit stupid not taking the chance and going to the bank and fixing this. I have asked for a "honesty reward" and the cashier is going to check with the manager. What would you do?

Honesty is the best policy.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1

I see what you are saying about honesty reward. What if the money was given to someone who is being difficult and not handing back the money? how much money would that have costed the bank in legal fees to reclaim? It also sets a trend that cashiers/bank can make mistakes as much as they like and it is the responsibility of "honest" citizens to voluntarily hand it over. Anyway just making a point - I could do with the reward though.0

It's more than likely the discrepancy would have been traced back to you by the end of the day anyway. Also, forgetting about the size of the bank, would you be happy to lumber the cashier with that sort of discrepancy to deal with? That's the sort of thing that can trigger a formal investigation if it can't be rectified.
Your comment about setting a trend that cashiers can make mistakes is ridiculous. Of course they can make mistakes, anyone can!

No. Because it's just not right, and you knew it.
Your actual reward is that you have a clear conscience and that poor cashier isn't in a heap of trouble for losing money they didn't lose. How would they be able to explain that?
You really asked for a reward?! Crikey. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. Ok guys - thanks for all the responses. I just wanted to see what others would do in a similar situation. In terms of reward from an international bank, I don't see any harm in asking. If they are happy to give some money then I will take it/equally not going to get upset if I don't get anything - If I didn't ask then I won't get anything. Why is this a big deal asking for a reward - its not like everyday people are being honest, are they?0

Some banks have loaded people onto CIFAS for "retaining wrongful credit" as it's theft. Knowing the bank could request it back/take it back at any time, I'd want it all above board as soon as possible.1

That whole post just sums up what is wrong with this world. The cashier could have got disciplined or fired. Why do you need a reward for doing the right thing?? The fact you don’t even care about being honest is worrying.16

Its a bank they win long term .
They charge 39.99% on your money via overdraft and give you ...what ?
You make a honest mistake or error and you will pay out thats a certainty .
Had same thing with a £1500 cashier mistake.
They just took it back after a text and a ph call they said would come ...except it never did .
They will try to give you a lesser amount ie.a sweetner and play the mistake they made down so you do not to make a complaint in a nutshell ....and they are masters at doing this highly practised at it .
Lodge the complaint ....
I was happy with fifty it just appeared they didnt discuss it at all game over ...cup of tea time... until the next game, win or lose .
You may win one or two but over your lifetime the bank will have had your pants down
So tighten the belt an go notch one up
