Thanks for your help everyone. I have contacted Bristan, and they think that the cartridge needs replacing. It's all under warranty, and they were going to send an engineer out to fix it without any charge. Only problem is, they don't cover my area (weird - I live in a large town!) So now they are sending out a replacement cartridge, and I have to either fit it myself, or get a plumber to do it. Bristan will cover all the plumber costs up to £89.
Wow - that's service! (I was really just thinking that they might be able to ID a cause, but - hey - that's a bonus :-)  )

Simply contact the original installer now to tell him what you've done and that a replacement cartridge is winging its way, so could you please come and swap it at your earliest convenience...

He should be grateful that you've saved him the effort of sourcing the part, and absolutely replace it FOC (which he would have had to do in any case).

You really should have got the installers back rather than getting involved with the manufacturer.  Your contract is with the installer and it is their job to address problems whilst the system is under warranty.  The installer may appreciate you identifying the problem but may not.
Thanks for this. I didn't really know who to go to, but my approach was to call the manufacturer as I knew that would be free. I suspected it would cost money to get the installer back out again. I was then on the phone to the manufacturer, and they were so helpful that I just said yes please to a new cartridge as I was on the spot. I didn't really expect them to offer. I guess at the end of the day, I don't even need to tell the plumber what I have done (though I think I will do).

Might be quicker to get it installed if you have the cartridge and all the installer has to do is turn up and change it. He/she doesn't have the hassle of waiting on an order.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • If the installer supplied the tap it's his responsibility to sort it you shouldn't have got a bill

Well I'm glad to hear it being sorted. The good thing about modern showers is that the bars are easily accessible and not buried away behind tiles as was the fashion not so long ago.
