I can't find mine but there's a tiny possibility it's somewhere, police might have it, might be at parents etc. However it's out of date and renewing and replacing are same price so overall I may as well just replace it?

  • You will have to declare your passport lost which will be noted by HMPO and possibly investigated.   Loss or defacement of passports aren’t taken lightly.  The passport is actually the property of HMPO and not the holder.    Once, you will probably be ok for a replacement but if say you go on to genuinely lose another one, you run the risk of delayed replacement or issuing for a shorter period depending on the circumstances.

So what am saying is don’t declare it lost because it is too much effort to look for it.   Do it as a last resort.

  • If you're renewing your passport you send your old one back. If you're replacing your passport because you've lost your old one then you will have to have your photos authenticated again like you did when you first applied for one. Then if you do find your old one at a later date I think you would have to send it in to them to be cancelled.

Why are you unsure about where it is ?
See if its at your parents and the police), it will save you the money getting it replaced.

Why would the police have it ?

So long since I've used it, there are many places it could be, in bags, drawers, pockets, houses, sheds, cars etc.

I thought somebody may have handed it in to police.

I don’t know if it’s still the same now, but in the past if a lost passport was handed in to the police they sent it back to the passport office.

You keep your passport in the shed?!
How many pockets or cars do you have to search?

Don't forget if you renew you only need your photo counter-signed if your appearance has changed significantly.  If you declare your passport as lost then you need your photo counter-signed before you make a new application.

What's surprising about that is the UKPA treat your old passport the same way as they treat your birth certificate in that it's a supporting document which needs to be returned to you once they processed your application.  (Although, they cut off the top corner in the same way a building society used to with a passbook for a closed account.)  On the other hand DVLA insist expired driving licences are cut in half and posted back to them.  Maybe any visas attached to the passport are not considered their property?
