Absolutely bonkers they sent that letter out in July and only blocked the card from spending in August.  Hundreds of people will have gone on spending sprees.
  • I don't know anything about this type of thing obviously or I wouldn't have been asking questions here, but maybe when you sign a contract they have to give you a period of warning before closing or people that have set up reoccurring payments from it, would have no time to change to other payment type. That's what the letter says, so maybe they had no choice.
  • Just flicking through their terms. They have to give you 2 months notice of account closure and one month notice to tell you they are stopping the card being used.
Cant see anything in there that says they reserve the right to stop the card being used straight away, which I find ridiculous.
  • Perhaps they weren't expecting to have to close accounts fast because they've somehow messed up, and enough that they are willing to wipe balances and delete all records if the account. Mostly when they close accounts people would still have to continue paying and including anything extra they've spent. Or not, I don't know.
It seems I've successfully cancelled my direct debit, according to my bank and if they take it now by setting up a new one, my bank says they can get claw out back. It doesn't feel right if I'm honest and as they said I might still hear from them until the day my account closes, if they ask for more payments after that I will probably try to sort it. Maybe if I'd changed to minimum payments after getting the letter I'd feel different as I'm sure lots did do that. Not that it's really any different...
