0% interest on credit card purchases

What does and does not qualify as a purchase during the interest free period?  I've always changed to a new deal when the period expires, and had the impression that I'd pay no interest other than for a cash withdrawal.  So, a purchase might include a meal, a hotel stay, etc, and not just an expensive item.  Do I have this right?  Just been charged interest on use of a new card because it was not a retail purchase.

  • What was the purchase? someone might then be able to answer your question although as a rule of thumb I've also always assumed 0% interest on purchases covers everything apart from cash withdrawals OR gambling transactions (never used a CC to gamble so not 100% and also believe gambling transactions on credit cards are banned now.)

Cash can also includes things such as currency, charity donations and topping up other accounts, such as children's school accounts.
  • OP - You have been charged because it was not a retail transaction - whatever it was.

I believe that you can also be hit with charges if you buy meals or stay in a hotel that's part of a casino. The Puritans are still around !

I have stayed at Vegas hotels on numerous occasions - this has never happened to me.

The way the OP refers to 'not a retail transaction' makes me wonder if he made some sort of wholesale transaction - ie used the personal CC for business purposes?
If so, I am a bit surprised they haven't closed his account as well as charging interest.
