  • The insurance company says
     IIMC143 30 days security condition - Alarm
You must upgrade the security to Your Home within 30 days from the inception date of this policy as follows:
Applicable to Section 1 Buildings and/or Section 2 – Contents whichever Section(s) is/are shown as being operative on the Schedule.
The insurer will not pay for loss or damage by theft or attempted theft from the Home unless:
The following security devices are fitted and put into operation at night and whenever the Home is left unattended
A Nacoss/SSAIB installed alarm (which is annually maintained.)
All existing security and protections already installed in the Home must remain in full use whenever the home is left unattended and when You or Your Family retire for the night. Once the security of the home has been upgraded to comply with the above.

So it can't be a DIY job from Amazon then. Has to be installed by a professional installer with installation certificate. For recommendations, it's probably best to check out the fb group that covers your local area for recommendations. My interpretation would be that it needs to be monitored, and that you have to have a maintenance contract on it.

Are there other insurers you could use instead if you don't want to go through the faff of getting this all installed?

Of course a decent system would certainly reduce the risk of a break-in - but you know your area more than the rest of us as to whether something of this standard is beneficial, and whether you've got 'stuff' that needs protecting.
