Can one ask for a week's paternal /maternal leave and use that for a holiday ?

In theory as long as you are happy lying to your employer then I guess it’s ok.

Also consider what you would do if you had a real emergency that required you to take some time off - it would possibly be refused

Why not just use annual leave

Why lie? If you get caught out you could get disciplined.

Surely if the OP is entitled to maternity/paternity leave it is up to them if they want to go on holiday during that period of leave.  I don't understand the problem but maybe I'm missing something.

I thought they were asking about parental leave which is unpaid but can be refused?

Not enough annual leave for my needs and with international family I do feel it's worthwhile having unpaid leave for visiting family /grandparents....

All you can do is ask -be honest and see what they say.

Can you just be honest and ask for the time off unpaid?  Your employer may be happy for you to go away for a while.

Your second post was about parental leave (there's a difference between that and paternity/maternity leave).

If you have the child with you when on holiday, that seems to be in order.
