Massive increase in electricity bills out of nowhere
Hi guys,
I currently live in a 2 bedroom flat and it’s my second year living in this location. The flat has only electricity and no gas, for the entirety of my first year I paid around £320 in electric bills and used around 1200 kWh. I pay quarterly and use coop energy, as I start the second year of my tenancy coop energy changed to octopus energy and then they changed my smart meter around 8 months ago without telling me. I normally pay quarterly but haven’t received a bill in around 10 months, then suddenly I receive a bill for £6600 and a further £1660 for around 30000kwh of use. I talked to them and the changed my bill to £1900 then £1500 without telling me or provide a reasoning. I would like some advice on how to solve this and why my bill sky-rocked by so much with no real change in number of inhabitants or lifestyle.

Post your meter reads for the last 12 months or so please. Does your bill show the meter change of 8 months ago ?
1200 Kwh in an all electric flat sounds low. What is the heating - storage rads, panel heaters ?
Read your meter today please
Check that the meter actually supplies you - switch off at the consumer unit by the meter and see if your supply goes off/Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Hi,have you been supplying regular meter readings, say, once a month, or at least kept a record of your usage? If your latest bill is estimated have you read the meter to see how it compares?0
-
So well it stated when coop moved to octopus the reading around 10 months ago was 36663 and now it’s 45725. I currently have 2 storage heaters in the apartment I only use 1 of them around 2 months of usage for 4 hours a day, I also have underfloor heating which is not used. My landlord has checked the meter as he took the readings around 2 weeks ago.

Hi there, it’s my first time renting for the first I supplied my readings 3 times when coop told me to provide some but the second year I have not done so. The meter readings are vaguely the same as the bill however it’s just a drastic change from the previous year0

Hi there,
i wasn’t told of the meter change at all so I don’t have a reading of that time period the only told about the meter change when I complained about my bill a month ago.0 -
Hi,there should be a sticker or card left by the meter with old and new readings on it.You say the landlord checked the reading, can you not access the meter yourself?0
-
There was a sticker but dated back to 2015 so I don’t think that’s much help. No I don’t have the keys to the cupboard so he helps me check when I ask.0

You need to get access to that meter and keep your own records. It makes life so much easier for you when this type of problem arises.
Post a copy of the bill that includes the meter change.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
