Newport Rotary Lite – “Know Your Newport?!” Trail
A fun family bench-based walk around Newport - collecting clues as you go!
Instructions for “Know Your Newport?!” Trail
1. Please complete the Know Your Newport Trail in at a time to suit your family
group and send in your answers by 10pm Mon 31st August.
2. Note there is nothing to be physically collected, no paperwork to be exchanged
and no buildings to enter to complete this walk.
3. The walk starts and ends at The Guildhall, High Street, Newport TF10 7AR, but
you can start at any convenient point along the route that you can identify from the
instructions.
4. The walk should take 1 - 1.5 hours, depending on how fast you walk and how
quickly you find the answers!
5. Hopefully it is suitable for all ages - young to old! There are plenty of benches to
rest on if need be.
6. Please supervise the members of your family group at all times whilst completing
the walk and looking for clues. Remember to maintain social distancing of 2m from
others not with your family group or bubble.
7. There are several roads to cross - please keep your group together and choose
safe crossing points. Try to do the walk at quieter times with less traffic e.g. evenings
or at the weekend.
8. If the weather is very hot please try to complete the walk at a cooler time of day.
Make sure you take water to drink, wear appropriate clothing and use sunscreen.
9. When completed, email in your 20 answers along with your contact details to
info@newportrotarylite.org.uk or message through our Facebook page “Newport
Shrops Rotary Lite”. Please send in your answers by 10pm Mon 31st August.
10. All correct answer sheets will go into the draw to win a prize one of three prizes –
below for details)

Good luck and thank you for taking part. Hope you had a fun walk and learnt a few
things about Newport along the way! – Newport Shrops Rotary Lite
Please supervise your family group when crossing roads & Remember to maintain
social distancing from others
The walk starts from the bench in front of The Guildhall, High Street TF10 7AR
1. The first answer to find is a date on the Guildhall – What date is on the front of
the Guildhall? ___________
2. Now walk up the High Street, towards Upper Bar and Station Road until you
reach Wellington Road. As you carefully cross Wellington Road you will see your
next bench. There is the name of a man on this bench. His surname is the
name of a tree. Can you tell us what it is? _____________
3. Keep going straight on along Upper Bar towards Station Road. Go past Travis
Perkins. The next bench is on your right with some big gates close by. What is
the date on the gate pillar? ___________
4. Keep straight on, carefully crossing over Granville Road to the memorial to
Thomas Fletcher Boughey. How old was Thomas Boughey when he died? _____
5. Now cross the road at the Zebra crossing, turn left and then right down
Granville Avenue. As you walk along Granville Avenue keep your eyes open for
Noah’s Ark and then tell us what animals you can see in the Ark.

6. At the end of Granville Avenue, cross over Audley Avenue and you will see the
next bench straight ahead. How many years old is this Bench? ________
7. Continue straight on along the footpath and then walk up Broadway. You will
pass an Athletic building on the right. What is it called? _____________________
8. Keep walking up Broadway until you get to the T junction with Stafford Road.
Look to your right and you will see the next bench. What does the Town Crier
say? _____________
9. Find a safe place to cross the Stafford Road and turn left back towards the
town. Stay on Stafford Road. At the junction with Laurel Drive you will see
another bench. What is the number on the green telecomms box? ____________
10.Continue down Stafford Road to the traffic lights and turn right into Water Lane
and then quickly right again into Tan Bank past the tyre garage. Round the
corner on your right is the next bench - what does this bench celebrate?

11.Cross the road into Victoria Park, you are heading towards the swimming pool
but turn left onto the footpath just before you get there. Walk around the back
of the building and you will find another bench by the outdoor gym. How many
pieces of gym equipment are there? ___________

12.Turn around and go back along the path for a few metres then take the right- hand path down through the park towards the Water Lane car park and 4
bollards, passing another bench. What is the number on the lamppost on the
same side as this bench? ___________
13.Do not go through the 4 bollards. Instead bear right and towards an area with
picnic benches. Walk round past the picnic benches and keep going. Then as
the path bends round past a big tree you will see another bench. What year was
Councillor Anne Covey Deputy Mayor? ______________
14.Carry on along the path with the canal on your right. Pass through the gap with
the big shed on your right and walk through the car park. Cross the canal at
the old Town Lock and read the information board. What number lock was the
Town Lock? _______________
15.Cross back over the canal and bear right towards a small brick building. Here,
on the paved area, are two benches. One has a councillor’s name on it. How
many letters in her name? __________
16.Turn left and head up Lower Bar towards town and St Nicholas’s church. On
the left near Evans & Tranter there is another clue to find. How many miles is it
from Chester to London via Newport? __________
17.Near the church you will see two benches - one each side of the arches. Look
across the road at Ace Computers and study the 6 windows above the shop.
What is unusual about one of the windows? ___________________________________
18.Walk up the cobbles of St Mary’s Street. You will pass several alleys off to the
left. What is the name of the alley way next to Duignan Phelps? ________________
19.Continue up St Mary’s Street until you get to the Square. Here you will find
some more benches. How many benches are there? _______
20.Turn right and pass in front of Central Square nightclub to find the pedestrian
crossing and cross over the High Street. Then turn left past Greggs and walk up
the High Street until you see the next bench. Close by is an estate agent’s shop.

21.Keep walking and you will end up back outside the Guildhall where you started.
