I think your earnings need to be under a certain amount each month to apply for LCW. maybe 16 x nmw per week unless you have PIP in place? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will correct me if this is wrong.

    Yes, that's correct.
Thank you, I'm currently doing 17 hours.

If your PIP is successful then fit notes from your GP will be needed to start the LCW process off. At the moment you would need to be working less than 16 hours to start the process off. Confirmation here.

    If you are working

If you earn more than the equivalent of 16 hours’ work per week paid at the National Minimum Wage, you will not be able to receive either the limited capability for work or limited capability for work and work-related activity payment unless you are also getting Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP). If you are getting DLA or PIP you will still need to attend a Work Capability Assessment to assess whether you can receive this extra amount.

Don't forget if your son is now claiming UC in his own right its reasonable to ask him to contribute to the household, particularly given the council tax situation.

Yes that is correct and I had overlooked it. OP’s earnings are slightly too high to be referred at the moment. If PIP is awarded they will be able to be referred.
Apologies to OP for missing that point earlier.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Oh yeah, of course he will. He knows he has to.

Have you have you tried a benefits calculator they take account of your address and work it out for you you presumably using your local councils scheme details. I must admit one of the things that puts me off part-time work is wondering if I will end up paying £1,000 a year council tax because I don't really understand it either.
