I am an essential worker and work in Europe, when I finish my shift this week I have a connecting flight at schipol in The Netherlands. Do I have to go into quarantine on my return even if I do not leave the airport?

If you are an essential worker are you not exempt from quarantine?0

Check the list of exemptions and see whether one applies to you. "Essential worker" is a meaningless term as many people who would be considered essential do have to quarantine. There are some exemptions for people based both on occupation and on their commuter status.
Transit does count as having arrived from one of the countries on the red list (even if you don't deplane).0 -
Also bear in mind that the regulations could have changed by that time! It's not difficult!
'Wander' - to walk or move in a leisurely manner.
'Wonder' - to feel curious.0 -

It really depends on what the OP actually does and/or how often he travels.0

The OP may be exempt under this, though:People who live in the UK but work in another country and travel between the UK and country of work at least once a week
You’ll need to complete the Public Health passenger locator form before you travel to the UK.
You will not need to self-isolate if you are staying in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. You’ll need to self-isolate if you are staying in Scotland.
You’ll need to show evidence that you reside in one country but work in the other and you should also be able to demonstrate that you travel between the two on a minimum of a weekly basis, for example, a season ticket.
