It's not difficult to understand really. You need a TV licence to watch a commercial TV station as it's being broadcast or BBC iPlayer, the service you use to access it (YouTube, Sky, ITV Hub, Freeview, Virgin etc) makes no absolutely no difference.

I think people are inclined to read the TV Licensing "information" and interpret it in the most proscriptive way possible - presumably that's what TV Licensing hope for in their use of unnecessarily confusing/ambiguous language.

In this case, there's really no need for them to even mention Youtube, because the potential for evasion (by concurrent streaming of Sky News) must be minuscule compared to the vast quantity of content there.

In fact, I think it probably only needs a "this applies irrespective of the type of device you are viewing on, or the platform/service your TV channel appears on".   I think naming all the platforms is more confusing.

Yes, because they could be misinterpreted as saying that you're okay to watch live TV stations if you can find a service to watch them on that we haven't listed on our website.

  • It would be much better is we adopted the model followed by our friends and neighbours in the EU, Denmark, where having a device capable of receiving TV as it is broadcast (e.g. a smartphone or a home computer with a broadband connection) renders you liable for a "media licence", whether you watch TV or not.   Theirs is a bargain at only £230/year as well.

You're talking nonsense, Denmark has its own licensing model, it has nothing to do with the EU.
