What should be included in a gas safety check?

Had my annual gas safety check done today by the cowboys that the housing association uses only this time it was taped.

Am I right in thinking that viewing the Flue is part of the check as well as checking that a cooker is attached to the wall and that the fail safety device (lid closing on a hob) should also be tested?

At least this time compares to last year he was in the house for a total of 11minutes compared to last years 7 minutes.

Never known an customer owned appliance be tested & its not part of guidance. You are responsible for maintaining your appliances if they are yours.

A quick google would have given you this criteria

If you feel it's been done badly, you can contact a gas safe engineer and ask him to come do one.

Yes, they should check that the flue is drawing OK and is not physically obstructed. And they should do an exhaust gas analysis from the flue, the result of which should be attached to the certificate.
11 mins to do that would be a tall order.

    An anecdote, so indulge me.

For many years, a friend of mine thought his annual gas check arranged by the HA was a full service.  The same engineer would come out every year and strip the boiler down, clean it, check it and replace anything that looked suspect. He would be on-site for at least two hours. This went on for eight years until the HA changed the gas servicing contractor. The new contractors walk around the house to check the flue and hardly touch the boiler apart from the pressure check and gone in 20 minutes.

In the first eight years the boiler never let him down, since then, its failed repeatedly.  He now understands the difference between a boiler service and a gas safety check.
