Company making me work weekends and evenings

Options
Hi
really need advice, working for a company where I work over the phone selling product. Before COVID 19 I was Was full time working weekdays one weekday off and working Saturday’s full time. Since Covid 19 they make me work only Saturdays Sunday’s and 2 week night evenings. I have children going back to school I asked if I can still work Saturday and 2 weekdays. They said no. They have many working week days. Why are they not letting me work week days to. Is this fair?

I'm guessing it's due to Covid and the fact they can only have so many staff working at a time. As to it being fair, life isn't fair. If you have a partner who can look after the kids on the two evenings you're working is it the end of the world? The other alternative is to end up unemployed.

If it's over the phone then surely it could be done from home, which would avoid the 'too many staff' situation altogether.

OP, as you getting paid the same amount for working weekends and 2 evenings as you were working full time? If so, might be worth sticking it out until things change.

Well that depends on what technologies they use but it certainly should be able to be done remotely but there is the other consideration, that its that they simply want less staff. OP states that they are doing telesales (doesnt mention if its inbound or outbound) and you'd imagine with country in recession, massive spike in unemployment, talk of things getting worse before better etc that sales may be down and staff requirements too.

I am certain also that many companies are intentionally cost cutting because of the down turn so even if demand is still there having people wait 1 hour to speak to someone is the new acceptable norm even for companies like John Lewis who traditionally had been more positive on customer service.

Of course they are. It's called survival.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

My brother had a similar issue, he’s a lamp lighter, and the company is insisting that he works late afternoons and into the evenings. He’d prefer mornings, but they claim that the business needs him there later in the day, and won’t budge.

It’s really annoying, as his last job was milk delivery, and in that job his dairy made him work in the mornings.

You’d think that companies could all just stick to 10-4, really.

Strange that isn’t it? It’s almost as if those jobs need to be done at those times.
