Recommend an android head unit?

Further on a previous post, can anyone recommend a quality head unit to replace my stock? I've looked on Amazon for head units and I just get a long list of weird strange brands I've never heard of. The Pioneer / etc Halford ones are extortionate. Hoping to find something less than £200 that's good for Gmaps and the occasional youtube (whilst parked of course!)

Have a look at the Atoto A6, there's quite a few different versions of it, some are below £200 but these have less memory and storage, you might want the more expensive versions with 2G RAM / 32GB storage to make it a bit more future proof.

Also, some versions are for specific car makes or have different button or input configurations so check the specification table carefully if choosing a version.

Along with some of those strange names is strange specification eg 1000W output but uses a 5A fuse, the replacement may not sound as good as the stock unless you get a branded model.

Pumpkin but they're over £300. It's one of the only ones that has a fast start so it'll come on instantly like a normal car radio. The rest of them basically take 30 seconds to start every time you turn them on which can be a real pain in the backside after a while.
  • We got some generic thing off Ebay for £35 ish - it plays music, links to front and rear cams and has built in sat nav
You don't need to spend much dosh.

None - went through them all Pumpkin, Joyming etc.  Issue is that the apps will crash when you need it the most.  You will be trying to restart stuff whilst 1 hand driving.  Not to mention all the time wasted installing, updating, buying 3G sim and configuring.

Finally got a Pioneer with wireless CarPlay.  Best thing ever, worth every penny. Just works.

You'll not find a branded Android head unit, closest you will get to that is a branded one with Android Auto, or about the closest to a 'brand' is Pumpkin as above.
I assume you have double DIN space in your car.
I had a very good experience with a Seicane head unit, after lots of research (xda-developers is good). You can certainly go cheaper but I didn't want a head unit that would get bogged down.
The one I got was Octo core with 2GB of ram, 32GB ROM, a 1024x600 screen (this is very good for a car) and had Android 8 at the time, they should have 10 by now. If you follow those specs you should do well, Waze, Play Music and everything ran great. If you're interested in having DAB, this is usually done via a USB dongle.
  • Thanks for the advice in the end I decided to risk it and went for an Atoto S8 Standard from Aliexpress (£187) fingers crossed it'll be a fairly uneventful installation. Spent another £35 on the harness, stalk adapter and aerial adapter.
