Currys are paying your 250 to keep it because they feel sorry for you because who buys kenwood????
We did because they made a narrow American style unit.

£800 down to £250 in 14 months isn't fair at all, I'd expect £550-£650 back if they're forcing the 'partial refund' route.

My post has disappeared ... the one where I commented that her post was unhelpful and judgemental. Maybe she and her "tony" pals ganged up to mark it as spam?

Depends entirely on if its currently available too.

Could be the case that it is still available and selling for £280 currently, in which case I'd say its fair.

There's a raft of information that's missing before making a decision.  On the face of it yes, it isn't fair, but it doesn't cover all scenarios.

the report you sent should of said that it was an inherent fault (present at purchase) not that its irreparable
That would have been impossible to prove. It's worked fine for 12/13 months.
    Okay - well thanks everyone.

The person writing the report doesn't have to prove that the fault was due to an inherent problem, just that the probability of it being the cause.
Even though it had worked fine for 13 months, it could have been caused by  something such as a substandard component that failed earlier than normal of poor quality assembly that lead to excess vibration of the compressor causing the failure.

...I have gone back to them with the European law that gives you a two year warranty.
@welshgje, where did you get this idea about a two year warranty?

Of equal relevance, we have left the EU.
  • Anywhere between £550 and £600 would be about right (based on 30% per annum)
  • Surely the way to approach this is to turn the question on its head and ask how much would you pay to buy a used 14-month old fridge-freezer that cost £800 new?  I certainly wouldn't be paying £600 like some here would seem to be suggesting.  The most I'd be paying would be around £500 and I'd say that £450 - £500 woud be a fair refund offer.  The offer from Currys of £250 really is a joke though.

OP - as others have suggested, the report from your engineer needed to conclude that the failure was due to a fault that existed when you took delivery of the item, not merely a description of the failure or that it was irreparable.

"He said it should not have failed like this (gas leak)."
That seems close enough to me. Only OP has the full report with the precise wording, but I'd interpret that as saying a correctly designed and manufactured fridge-freezer should not experience this failure 14 months after purchase.
£250 back on an £800 item is fobbing you off. I say continue to fight your case.
