KLM Travel Insurance Claim Help (how to do it)

We have a return flight booked from Manchester to New York (via Amsterdam) on the 20th September which we booked in February.
It seems highly likely the flight will go ahead. Having read many posts it seems the FCO advice not to travel and even the presidential proclamation stopping us from entering the US are not KLM's problem. Having spoken to KLM it seems the best they will offer it to re-book the flight at a later date.
We have travel insurance that should cover us if we cant go due to the presidential proclamation stopping us entering the US.
My question is, do we cancel the flight ourselves and then claim through our insurance or do we no show at the airport and then claim?
I don't want to do the wrong thing and invalidate the insurance claim.
Any help would be much appreciated.

First thing to do is speak to your insurance company who will be able to confirm whether you are covered or not, and will then be able to advise what to do to enable a claim. They will more than likely want either a cancellation confirmation if the booking is cancelled, or a "no show" confirmation if you don't cancel and then don't turn up.
First problem you might have, and it will depend on the insurance company, is that some are saying if you are offered a credit note or date change, they won't consider a claim.0 -
Thanks for the reply. I will speak to the insurance company and see what they say.0
