Ex is refusing to sign sale papers

Finally have a buyer for house and ex is trying to block sale of hlise as he is now going back on our financial agreement and refusing to sign papers for sale of house and is insisting we have to go to solicitor to get an agreement of fi alcial settlement drawn up even though I have messafes (WhatsApp) agreeing to the amount he will take from house  sale. He also wants 50% of equity even though he put nothing into hoise in way of deposit and I put in 96K. All and any help is greatly appreciated.

Were you married? How long for if so? Any kids together? My ex wasn't entitled to half as it was a short marriage.

Someone else will probably be along to advise on how ownership may also affect you (tenants in common or joint tenants).

If you have no declaration of trust in place then legally he owns half the house and entitled to 50% of the sale proceeds. Your best option is to go to a solicitors and negotiate around the figure that you have messages you received.

How much mortgage is still owing on the property?

Sounds like he has been advised to speak to a solicitor. You should do the same, as a whatsapp agreement carries no legal weight. Hopefully you can do that before you lose your buyer. If you mean you were married, all assets are shared no matter who paid for them.
  • We need more information as others have said. On what basis did you buy the house? Were you married? You refer to a financial settlement but was that privately or legally agreed? Be prepared to lose half and for him to dig in his heels until he gets what he wants so you may lose your buyer.
