Relocating to Leeds area - recommendations

Try looking at Apperley Bridge, Idle and Thackley. Bradford but close to the border of Leeds. You get a lot more for your money with a BD postcode but there are obviously less desirable areas. Bramley is cheaper than Pudsey but arguably a lot less desirable. Rodley and Calverley (Leeds) are nice Areas but more expensive- though on the fringes of those areas you can pick up a bargain. It will be difficult for you to judge without knowing the areas as there is a lot of difference in ‘niceness’ and how quiet areas are even in the same post code, like most places. Happy to help if you have any specific questions. I live in Bradford and know most of Leeds.1

We have lived in Yeadon before, love the area. You could look at Guiseley and Yeadon (similar to ilkley but more affordable). Guiseley also has a train station as well. Some of Yeadon is close to the flight path, and some you can hardly hear it. There is also rawdon but it’s slightly more expensive. If you consider these areas I would advise spending a few hours and seeing if you would be fine with the planes.
You could try Otley too, no train but I’m sure there are busses that go to Leeds- possibly double check. There is even a walk from Yeadon to the Chevin and into Otley- nice outdoor walk.
Horsforth is nice, and a shorter commute. Cookridge seams nice (never lived there though).
Then like suggested there’s Baildon, Thackley, etc. I can’t say anything about them. My partner has lived in Rodley and Pudsey and they were fine, built up but ok as a temporary place if what you want is the outdoors.1 -
Dear OP
We moved from Leeds many, many years ago we lived in a nice area but thought about moving to Roundhay but moved to se England. From what you said you reminded me of the area we lived in, Roundhay. I still have a cousin there but the last time I was there is more than 12 years ago but it still looked good
Has a massive park, open spaces, places to eat, drink etc lovely property in most parts.1 -
If public transport into Leeds is a priority use that to decide your location. I would concentrate on rail and areas close to stations and see if your budget is adequate.
Bus services to many areas are simply woeful and in non Covid times the traffic means even short trips can take far too long. Pudsey to Leeds is about 5 miles, it can take an hour or more.
Alternatively if you fancy jumping on a bike, especially during summer, somewhere with access to the canal which has a cycle friendly towpath.

Huddersfield... you would get a house for £170k with your requirements in countryside villages like Golcar, Slaithwaite, Marsden... and slaithwaite & Marsden both have train stations with trains straight through to Leeds.1

It's not so long ago that Bramley held the distinction of having the highest burglary rate in the country. Things may have improved since then, but my cousin moved out after she had been burgled 9 times in 10 years.musashi10 said:And most recently been looking at Pudsey and Bramley areas.1 -
I moved from Bramley to a place called Gomersal just outside Leeds... The prices are lower in Birstall Morley Cleckheaton areas. Easy access to cities but the area is surrounded by fields..1

You could do worse than look at Wakefield, Dewsbury and Pontefract. All have rough areas but also very nice areas and have excellent train links to Leeds and have the benefit of being close to the M1 or A1. I moved to Wakefield 20yrs ago and, with family down south, being close to the M1 is very helpful. It’s a 13 min train journey into Leeds city Centre and a 20-30 min drive depending on where you are. I would suggest you’d want to look at Sandal, Walton, Horbury, Ossett, Newmillerdam for Wakefield; I’m afraid I don’t know the other areas as well.

I think you should seriously consider this. Much easier to work out which areas in and around Leeds you like that are compatible with your budget once you're there.pinkteapot said:Would you consider renting first? We relocated to the other end of the country a couple of years ago and renting was absolutely worth it. Once actually living there we quickly ruled out some areas andI villages that we had assumed, from afar, would be ideal for us. Until you’re there it’s really hard to judge what transport and amenities are like."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0 -
Sounds like Rodley would be almost perfect for you. It's a lovely area, nicer than Pudsey or Bramley but you should find what you're looking for around £170k. There are good walks by the canal and river nearby and you're close to the edge of Leeds and countryside.
I'm not as sure about public transport. I think there are regular buses into the city but I couldn't tell you about into the countryside. There are train stations not too far away but may be around 45 minutes to an hour walk depending on where in Rodley you were.1
