Building Equipment Hire

I m getting  some minor works done and am happy to pay a  bit upfront  but I ve been asked to pay for equipment hire deposit.costs as well as the hire.   The  deposits double tbe cost of the work.  I ve never had this before.  Anyone else had it.

Is this contractor wanting you to hire the equipment in your own name ?

If so, I'd be telling him to take a hike pretty sharp - What happens if he does a runner with the equipment or damages it beyond repair - You'll be left with the (not inconsiderable) bill on top of any deposit paid.

Quite frankly, if a contractor doesn't have the funds to pay for equipment hire, he has some serious cash flow problems. This sets alarm bells ringing and raises even more questions. Will he complete the job to a good enough standard, or is he going to cut corners. Will he be around in six months time to fix any faults. Will he be after more money to pay for materials, and will he actually use them on your  job or on another..
