A buyer purchased an item of which he paid £8.85, which I received £8.29 after Paypal fees. He then cancelled the sale and was refunded £8.59 when I agreed to let him cancel. So why have I lost out here ?

Paypal keep the fees even after cancellation or refunding , it changed about 4 months ago.

Quite right, I missed that. PayPal do show refunds strangely So it is likely that hubb has just misread the numbers.
