Flight Refund?

I had a return flight with Singapore Airlines from Heathrow to Manila in March. My return flight was cancelled due to Singapore banning transit passengers. Singapore Airlines we're not operating any alternative routes for me to take.
I eventually bought a ticket to fly home with another airline. Is Singapore Airlines obligated to compensate me for the ticket I had to buy? If so what regulations can I quote to them?

Did they actually physically cancel the flight or did it fly without you being on it?0

Airline conditions of carriage should advise what happens in the case of a cancelled flight - I would suspect you should get a refund on the unused portion of your ticket and defer to your travel insurance (this assumes the flight was cancelled, otherwise probably only travel insurance relevant)0
