I have a polytunnel and I'm still sowing baby leaf salad for 3 weeks time right now. Lettuces and mizuna that are winter-hardy will also go into the deep beds once things have cooled down. Lettuce doesn't like too much heat.
But don't rush out to get a tunnel. You need to take time choosing something like that. There's also the chance of a free greenhouse on something like Freecycle too, if you look round for a while.

Thanks. I'll get animals to eat the weeds as you advised then use glyphosate to get rid of deep roots or problem areas. Is there a cheap generic glyphosate available, don't want to pay Roundup prices.
If i were to grow potatoes how do they fare in cold winter weather. Also, any more winter hardy plants.
    Thanks!

Potatoes will grow for winter so you couldhave them for your christmas dinner but you will have to grow them either originally somewhere where you can protect them from the frost [ frosted leaves equals no potatoes] or in a box/basket/tub/bag that can be moved to a shelter.
Winter hardy plants, kale [ you will need plug plants now for that] and there is a variety of lettuce called reines de glace which will grow in winter, also lambs lettuce, some pak choi.mustard greens..stuff like that. Sprouts and cabbages [ a lot of brassicas basically] will stand over winter but again, you would need plug plants now preferably. You can sow broad beans in the winter ofr the late spring and garlic in octber/november for next year.

I would definitely go with daves usggestion of a polytunnel, the bigger the better. It will extend your growing season by at least two months,
