Wanting a regular gas meter (not a top-up one)

Hello everyone
I'm asking this for a cousin of mine. He and his family are currently on a token (top-up meter) for both his electric and gas.
He wishes to change to a regular meter where he can pay by direct debit.
He called his supplier British Gas and asked them to install a regular meter, but they refused, the reason they gave was that he "has bad credit"!
I'm confused. He is on a top-up meter, so I'm not sure how he can have bad credit, he always tops up on time ...etc.
Is there anything he can do to get a regular meter installed for his gas and electric?
We'd appreciate any help and advice.
Thank you.

Brit Gas are known for being very picky about changeing a PAYGO meter to a Credit Meter, they won't do for anyone who has less than a Gold Star credit rating, and sometimes not even then !

Your cousin should change supplier to some one who's more reasonable - EDF for example.
EDF are not the cheapest kid on the block, but BG aren't either - So when that meter is in, move to another supplier

The bad credit is all forms of credit, not limited to the energy account.British Gas quite possibly the most unhelpful and obstructive energy company I've ever had the previous misfortune to deal with.Could look at switching supplier, dont know if theres any obligation to provide a standard, non key meter though.Would likely be credit checked/scored by any potential new supplier so no further forward.
