Hello
Asking for a friend who is planning to relocate.
Currently my friend lives in a private rented house and works. She does not receive any benefits as her two grown up children live with her - all three are working and can manage the rent between them.
Friend wants to relocate, she won't have a job or permanent home to go to. However, she is a Carer and she is likely to start work within a couple of months at her new location. She is planning to rent a room initially and her personal possessions etc into storage for the time being.
Could someone point out which benefits she could claim for in the short term? Also, what she would need to do to make a claim?
Many thanks

Why is she moving without a job and a home to go to? Depending on the reasons she quit her current job then she could be sanctioned for 26 weeks for benefit purposes.

If she were to claim she would be looking at Universal Credit or new style JSA - use a benefit calculator to check entitlement. However, as poppy has said, she could be sanctioned if she has given up work without good cause.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0

Thanks for this information. She is moving because her son's have both left home and she can not afford to rent a three bedroom property. She has tried to find a one bedroom property but she just can't find anything at all. Where she is moving too, even on minimum wage, she will find a one bedroom property much easier (currently, she is in the London area - getting a rental property is far from easy in this area).
I am certain she will find work within a few weeks but she would definitely need some kind of top up housing benefit.0 -

I am certain she will find work within a few weeks but she would definitely need some kind of top up housing benefit.Housing benefit can only be claimed in very certain circumstances. As she doesn't claim any benefits at the moment then it will be Universal Credit that she will need to claim for any help with the rent. She's already got a job, moving elsewhere and leaving her job in these current times isn't advisable. Has she used a benefits calculator to check if she's entitled to any Universal Credit? If she hasn't then i'd advise her to do that before deciding to move.2 -
She can very easily get a job where she will be moving to. It won't pay anymore than she earns now, however, it is much easier to get a home. A one bedroom property in the area she is going to move to is no more than 600 per month. Where she is currently, she is looking at at least £1100 per month. Shortfall in rent/hb is about £300 per month. New area, shortfall is only about £25 per month. Impossible to stay in London - trying to bridge that kind of gap on rent - just isn't manageable.0

It may not be as easy as you think when claiming benefits because landlords just won't accept benefit claimants, it's extremely difficult. Those that do could well ask for a guarantor.

Hence the reason she will be renting a room until she is established. Thanks - have found the calculator.0
