checking on old building society accounts

I've just found a document relating to my grandmothers will which commented that I should have had a bequest held in trust for me, which I don't think I ever got. The issue is that it was with the Burnley Building Society in 1974, yep a long time ago and the Burnley was taken over years ago. Is there anyway of finding out if the money was ever paid out or is still retrievable?

Even so, it may be worth having a go. See https://www.which.co.uk/money/savings-and-isas/savings-accounts/how-to-find-lost-bank-and-savings-accounts-a4jqc3j05fpb#headline_70 -
