Complaint not upheld as Abbey were taken over by MBNA

Hi experienced PPI reclaimers, I'm looking for some help.
I sent in a claim to Santander before the deadline last year. Today I have received a letter from them saying they have not upheld the complaint and have closed the case because post September 2001 the Abbey credit card was taken over by MBNA and as such, MBNA are responsible for the PPI. Does this mean that I now have to contact MBNA and if so, I've clearly missed the deadline. Or does my original complaint date still stand? I know there was PPI paid and I have copies of statements. Or do I contact the Ombudsman? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Some firms are volunteering to accept a complaint in this type of scenario if you can provide evidence that you complained elsewhere first within the deadline.
Or do I contact the Ombudsman? The FOS can only consider the response of Santander. As Santander are not legally liable for the complaint, there is nothing to gain from going to the FOS.
