I've just been to check fitting the dipstick again and there is a definite push to get it in so it could possibly be me not putting it in properly.
I think I might be best visiting my Dad as I'm not that familiar with some of the terminology.
He also live next to a ford garage if it is something other than me being an idiot.
I honestly think that is the most likely scenario.
Haha, you do realise that could be read as 'the most likely scenario is the owner is an idiot' :)

Or that particular dipstick is hard to push home compared to any other dipstick I have come across

I don't. Even if you hadn't put the dipstick in the engine bay wouldn't be covered in oil. The only way for that to happen is if there's pressure in the crankcase that shouldn't be there to push oil out of the dipstick tube.

Thank you, I'll keep an eye on it. A 10 mile drive and the dip stick stayed in place

It happened to mine on about 50000 miles, same engine, dipstick not fully home,  got the sound proofing replaced as it was soaked in oil, now done 115000 with no further issues

2 x 10 mile trips and it's still firmly in place. I probably won't be able to give it a good run until the weekend so fingers crossed it was my error.
But at least it's still in warranty if there is a problem

You wouldn't, but it the mechanic will know where it is.  Its underneath the inlet manifold, well it was on my old one.
