Council Tax Reduction: non-dependent deductions

Options
Hi
I'm having a confused moment. I've just had a change in income and receive CTR. I have a child who is a full-time university student (returning back to her uni in a couple of weeks).  The CTR reduction has included a non-dependent dedcution in respect of said child (who is not working and has not spent all the lockdown at home (long story but she has another 'bubble' due to her mental health)).  Have the council made an error, as in the calculations for the previous 'bill' said child was not included in the math, or have I missed a change somewhere?
Thank you :)

  • Full time uni students have no liability for CT no matter where they live.

Yep, I agree with venison. Full time students don't pay CT and are not liable for it. But if you are puzzled about any aspect of your Council Tax, I would advise phoning them. There seems to be a lot of confusion around that subject at the moment and councils don't appear to want to make it simple, either. If you phone someone in your council tax office, they will hopefully be able to explain what they are on about. Seems a bit confusing, them describing your daughter as 'non-dependant', when that's not right as non-dependants are expected to make a contribution to CT - which obviously won't apply to your daughter.

I think students can be expected to contribute during the summer vacation. Possible that Council have simply not recorded fact that they are a student - have you provided evidence that they are a student?
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Hi, thanks for all your help.  The CT office have details of the degree course (term dates and which uni) - I'll see if I can get through on the phone again (think they are not up to capacity with humans in the office).
