Using a credit card to pay for a holiday

We are looking at booking a camping trip in the UK but the site we are looking to go to states that if it is cancelled due to the coronavirus their insurance doesn't cover this so will not give a refund. The question I have is if I pay for it on a credit card and it gets cancelled can I claim my money back from the credit card company? Many thanks, Alan

If they cancel they are liable to refund, whatever they say.
  • Their Insurance might not cover you (why would it?) but your OWN travel insurance might - check the terms and conditions of your policy before booking.
Otherwise ask for a provisional booking saying you will pay on arrival - if they refuse go somewhere else.
As for S75 it might not be needed - if they close the campsite and cannot offer you what you paid for then ask the bank for a chargeback?

Credit card (Section 75) is not a "cover all scenarios" protection. It only covers you if the supplier fails to provide the goods or services as per the contract.

    - If the campsite closes, then they would have to refund you, regardless of whether it's a non-refundable booking or not. If the campsite refused, you could use the credit card for a chargeback or Section 75 claim.

    - If the campsite is open and available, but you can't get there for any reason (Covid or otherwise) then you wouldn't be due a refund. Credit card wouldn't help you either because the campsite isn't in the wrong. This is where you'd need appropriate travel insurance.
  • Thank you for your advice, I will see if I can book provisionally. I do have some travel insurance that I took out in January but I am sure it states they will not pay out in coronavirus cases, cheers.

Such a clause is unenforceable. If they cancel, then you are entitled to a refund: their lack of insurance is their problem and irrelevant. Any site stating such terms is amateurish in the extreme.
Your card provider will cover you under certain circumstances, but will expect you to mitigate your losses-which means demanding a refund from the provider in the first instance.
