Double chargeback

Bit of a long story, but I had ongoing issues with Harvey’s over a sofa I ordered in February. I cancelled this order back in May and was told to wait 30 days for a refund. Two weeks into this, Harvey’s went into administration and I had to fight to get my money back. I was loading with Harvey’s but also stArted a chargeback with my bank, monzo.

Monzo said they would investigate and that it could take 8 weeks and that if Harvey’s refunded me in the meantime that the chargeback would be cancelled.

the good news was that Harvey’s refunded me the full amount around 6 weeks ago. thought no more of it.

just been alerted to a message from monzo depositing £1800 refund into my account now saying that my chargeback was successful.

now I know that the money isn’t mine, but my questions are as follows :

- how could this have happened?
- who do I contact about the refund, monzo or Harvey’s (administrators) ?

Thanks.

This will be easiest to sort out via Monzo, so it would be best to contact them and provide details of the refund payment you previously received. Hopefully they can just reverse the chargeback payment and that will be the end of it. The administrators will eventually get round to picking this issue up, and it's not unheard of for them to simply engage a debt collection agency to recover the wrongly refunded sum.

So the administrators have not contested the chargeback. So it wins by default. There is no way to reverse a chargeback at the banks end. Only a retailer can contest it.
Contacting Monzo will not doubt see you told there is nothing they can do. Just the same as most banks would.
So pop the excess in a savings acc, and await a call from administrator over the error.

  • I have to agree with born_again - but please do not be tempted to use it at all - the administrators will have 6 years to ask for the money back.

Monzo customer services fairly poor to be honest, waiting 12 hours so far for my query to be picked up.
Anyway, thanks for the above advices. Should i contact the administrators? I mean, 6 years to hold onto someone elses money is a bit of a long time! The administrators will have run down the operations way before that anyway but..

Whack it in a Monzo savings pot, not going to do you any harm..if they ask they ask and if they dont they dont.

Administrators generally have a lot to work through, and will tend to prioritise work that brings in the most money. Your payment may not be a priority, but they will probably get around to it considerably sooner than 6 years. It is up to you if you wish to drop them an email to make getting in contact easier. In the mean time you can earn some interest on the money you are holding, so keep it separate as suggested above and be prepared to repay it on demand.

Why miss the chance of a bit of interest and the chance of a bonus.
Odd's on they will never pick it up. Remember these are very well paid people. Who will be more interested in off loading Harveys to add to their bonus. Not check the books to ensure people have not been over refunded.
