Will I get funding for PGCE now that I've discovered an old student debt resulted in a CCJ?

Options
Hi, I studied for 2 years in the early  to mid 90s and left mid way through my degree as I fell pregnant and my partner threatened me with physical violence (he is not named on the birth certificate and CSA never recovered any monies from him for this reason). I had some contact with the SLC and advised them of my circumstances, but when my child was only young, I bumped into my ex and in order to avoid further problems, moved away from the area in which we lived altogether, to a fairly remote area.  Over the years, my family grew, I worked part time and I studied for a degree part time (funded by another body).  I returned to the area some 20 years later and began to seek funding for the final 2 years of this degree from Student Finance England, but the other awarding body confirmed they would honour the fees until completion so funding from Student Finance England was not required and, despite giving them my history, I was told that they could not find me on their system, that they had no record of me and it must've been too long ago.
I have now graduated and gained an offer of a place to do teacher training.  Student Finance England have had my application for a month, and I've made no progress until yesterday, when I was told that there is a CCJ against me and I will be ineligible for further funding until such time as it is paid in full, though they could not yet tell me the exact amount.  The company servicing it is raising an investigation with its business support department and did quote a figure but confirmed that that may not be what the court decided would be payable.
My questions are:
1) is the final amount due likely to be less than, the same as, or more then the amount that the company servicing the account quoted to me?
2) even if the amount is paid in full immediately, will this prevent me from securing funding for my pgce year?
I had no knowledge of this action until yesterday, 27 years after I first began the degree, and while I see I ought to have kept in touch with SLC, there were extenuating circumstances which saw me leave my entire family and network of friends behind and rendered me feeling that my child and I were unsafe if anyone knew where we were.
Thank you in advance for your  help and advice.

Ccjs don't last 27 years So it wont date back to that first degree.
Have you had any debt more recently, like the last 5-7 yrs?
You need to check your own credit file. With equifqx and experian.

Bit baffled as to why SFE is even credit checking you to get a government loan. Student finance shouldn't do that and wouldn't usually. I had mountains of debt when i went to uni and nothing was said.
  • Hi, thanks for the reply.
Student Finance England themselves confirmed there's a 'suppression' on the account because they raised the CCJ against me for the historical debt and the company who are servicing it, who they gave me the number for, say it's for student debt through the Student Loans Company as they were then, and from 2008.
Both said the debt would have to be paid in full before I could apply for further funding.  I'm just wondering if I will ever get that PGCE funding, even if I settle the amount outstanding in full?!  The figure quoted to me was just over three thousand, including interest.  This would seem to fit with what I would have owed, I think the last paperwork I received detailed around two thousand, six hundred.
I don't want to avoid paying this, I just don't want it to ruin my chances of qualifying, not this year, and not ever

If you want a chance of the funding, the debt will require paying.
Otherwise, as the judgement is well over 6 years old, they would have to go back to court in order to further enforce the judgement, and, due to the passage of time its extreamely unlikley permision would be granted.

  • No question that I will be paying the debt, I'm just concerned to know whether it means that I will necessarily be excluded from any possibility of future funding from Student Finance England.   Thank you for your responses, both.
    Stay safe!
