website designers?

hi all... i need some help with a website.. i haven't started it yet, and have no intention of doing so as i simply dont know what im doing! First of all, let me explain what i'm after.

A membership style website which allows members to update their own details. In our case our members will be business' and I would like them to have their own login/password so that they can edit their own details as and when they see fit. also being able to upload pictures etc

I would like some sort of admin side, which would allow me to make changes to listings if the need arose... but by and large it would be down to the customer.

Also.. I would like this site to include counties from all over the UK, which i assume is pretty standard... so a viewer can do a search for their town/county and all the local buiness' will be there in front of them with basic details.. they then click on their preferred business and up pops that particular business' page, as described above... sound simple??... great...

so who knows someone who can do it for a couple of peanuts and a few quid?!

anyone any advice? thanks for any advice and help you can offer.. it is appreciated.

i really don't fancy getting a template with database for $50 with it all pre-packed and just having a bog standard thing..

cheers

if i was you id look at using php with mysql as the database
building a user login system and backend admin system would be easy enough

can be done with asp -however php imo is more powerful, free and open source, as is mysql for personal use

    hope this helps a bit?
  • Is there any point in creating such a site, unless its to make money ( or a loss leader for some other venture) , in which case surely you should be paying slightly more than peanuts.

Haven't Yellow Pages pretty much got this covered anyway

I did THIS many years ago but it did cost him more than a few quid - it works in a similar way to you describe each hotel can create/edit their own entry

MySql is a good choice. Hosting is quite cheap for such databases (compared with hosting Microsoft Sql Server).

PHP is more powerful than ASP, but not ASP.Net (and the whole .Net framework). ASP/ASP.Net are free too. They usually cost slightly more to host though.

What you're mentioning sounds quite standard. Instead of getting it built, which may cost more, take longer, and offer less quality/functionality. It may be worth looking at existing products.

PHP Nuke and DotNetNuke are two examples. As is Community Server (from Microsoft). They all offer membership/admin functionality etc.. and you can tailor/skin them to your needs and site design.

should I have come on and said "I have £2k to spend in a site... what shall i do?"... and of course i think it will make money, i wouldnt be doing it otherwise. I think I have found a gap which customers would find useful (no, not plumbers!) and I would like a website designing.

Thanks for all your help... and the pm's i have had.

  • Whatever technology you want to use, it doesn't matter. You need to establish your requirements (what information you wish to display to the website user, users who log in and change their details, yourself as the overall admin). What functionality do you want to provide to each 'layer'

If you want to use a more 'modern' technology, you could look out for people who code using Ruby on Rails - it's a programming framework that lets you build databased websites quickly.

If you plan to build this as a business, paying peanuts will only get you monkeys. You'll want someone to support it down the line and develope future functionality.
