Data plan for Apple Watch ...confused..

Apologies but seems really difficult to actually get an answer from apple (online chat was not helpful!)
My phone contract runs out next month and I would normally shop around for a better deal, however I bought an apple watch on contract with the same provider a few months in and it needs a data plan.. so my question is does my phone and watch need to be with the same provider or can I just connect them up and have them with different providers .. thank you

My understanding is that the (I)phone and watch need to be on the same plan. They don’t have different SIM cards. Just the one SIM card for the phone.
I looked into this with EE and they will charge you an extra £5 per month on top of whatever phone plan you take from them.

originally only EE offer plans that support Apple Watch mobile data. Now its Vodafone, O2 and EE. But you add the watch to thr phone plan, you can't get a SIM just for a watch. See https://www.apple.com/uk/watch/cellular/

Otherwise you can always connect the watch to your phone via Bluetooth if the cellular data isn't important to you.
