Hyundai ix35

Can a faulty battery cause the orange maintenance light to come on? Also give a fault reading for an egr fault? Ix35 1.7 diesel 2012

Have had the egr cleaned and a service but fault remains.  The car is stuttering in low gear and loss of acceleration.

Yes, low voltage can cause various glitches.

But, once the car's running, a faulty battery shouldn't cause low voltage - unless the alternator's also sagging. (Is that what's taken the battery out?)
  • Thanks Adrian. We had to have the battery jump started a couple of times as the kids left the light on.  Greenflag technician did mention that the battery might need replacing. That was a couple of years ago 🤣. As the car has been working we haven't got around to replacing it.
Would it be worth mentioning to the garage or should I wait for them to diagnose and advise the work required?

It might be a bad alternator. Just let the garage diagnose - they will have access to a lot more information than you using professional scan tools. Make sure you trust the garage though - or they might try and sell you four new shocks for a bad alternator.  :D

I'd mention it to the garage and get them to test the battery and alternator. Batteries aren't expensive so it may be worth replacing as a precaution.

If that's the original 2012 battery I'd change it as a starting point, certainly before the winter.

Flattening a battery is the best way to kill it... Sometimes, they die quickly, sometimes it merely shortens their life a bit. If it's the original, 8yrs is good going.

But if that's the sum total of your "Could it be the battery?", and it's still starting quite happily, then that's not your problem.

Get fault codes read, for a starter. A fiver will buy you a bluetooth diagnostic reader that connects to a free phone app.

Yep, I took care to link to a UK-sourced item, so it won't take two months to arrive.

The joys of modern complex diesels, especially ones that don't cover high mileages.
