Transferred or Cancelled Jet2 Flights

Looking for advice and feedback. We have flights booked from Stansted to Faro at the end of September with Jet2. A few days ago I received a message from Jet2 informing me that they had "transferred" us to a much earlier flight (08:10 - original flight was at 15:50). This time is not convenient for us and we while we probably would have flown, we weren't keen. My view is that the original flight has been cancelled and we have been offered an alternative, even though the email is not worded in this way. I've come across EU 261/2004, which suggests that I am right as we have been given a different flight number. I have complained to Jet2 as I would like a refund, quoting the EU 261 regulation. I will state that I am not after any compensation, just a refund. All comments and opinions are welcome.

Jet2 have been one of the better companies in this crisis.
It's normal when airlines cancel a flight that they'll transfer you to another flight if possible - usually an automated process. Just call them, politely tell them that as your flight has been cancelled you'd like a refund. Shouldn't even be a need to raise a complaint.
