HELP! Wall Panelling

Hi everyone,
as part of my ongoing house renovation, we have decided to do wood panelling throughout our hallway to give it that extra character.
ive been looking at images so I can get a carpenter to do it for me. I’m planning on using 18mm MDF, made in to strips then putting it on to fresh plaster wall to create the boxes. I then plan on putting mouldings in to each square. However, I can’t seem to find the correct mouldings. The most common depths on mouldings are 6mm to 12mm.
i feel I need 18mm mouldings to look good against the 18mm mdf, but not sure if 12mm would look fine?
ive put a few pics in for reference. If anyone can figure out what or how the mouldings are done in each square I’d be very grateful.

If you're using a carpenter, tell them what you want and they will advise what is practical & do it for you. They can cut all the fancy shapes with a router or make or get mouldings to any design.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.3

you will find that the wood panellings in those pics are solid , so where you are planning to leave a hole in the middle - dont, if you use 6mm mdf for the middle then you can happily fit 12mm mouldings

Or you can use 12mm mdf...Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Never underestimate a carpenter with a router! IMO 18mm rails are too bulky 12mm would give you the look you’re after!Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'2
