This the one with the poor Amazon reviews and which can't be NTFS-formatted ?

    Why do you need NTFS?

Network attatched devices (music players etc) usually prefer FAT32 anyway.

If your storing DVD's on a LAN then do you actually get a good enough data rate across the lan for them to play without juddering? You could always use dvd shrink to take off some of the extra's to ensure it fits.

Actually I was also thinking "Why store a DVD on a NAS?"

Then I thought, "Ah, but he may want to store HD movies, and they can be 8Gb+".

Oh, and yes, you can stream a DVD across a 100mbps network.

Yup! I've got a Freecom 350HD to do that for me, at 1080P HD as well!

NTFS is a microsoft technology and as most NAS's are based on some form of Linux NTFS is out of the question (IIRC Linux can read NTFS but is not perfect at writing it).
Luckly that problem has now been solved with fuseblk and the most recent Linux distributions (such as Ubuntu 7.10 which I'm using now) mount your Windows partitions read/write by default. I can imagine that legal/licensing issues would prevent the disks being NTFS formatted though.

Then use a Linux file system such as ext3, for which you can get Windows drivers if you want to plug it into a Windows machine.

:D:D The Personal emailed vouchers are back too, just got £5 off £40 spend, use by 20/12.

I know my local had 2 of the Smart drives which were spirited away at £159 into the back as part of a tidy up/change of manager. Really waiting till they reduce the Buffalo 500gig media NAS, in Jan or Feb.
