2 Questions re R40 form

Looking at this R40 form I have a couple of questions, firstly the section re employment income etc looks like it's set up for PAYE but I'm self employed and as yet haven't filed my self assessment for 19-20 yet so I cant fill  2.1 & 2.2 do I need to complete this section as its only PPI tax I'm claiming for?
Secondly I had more than one PPI claim upheld in the last year so when filling out 3.1 3.2 3.3 do I add them all together?
Thanks

  • I'm self employed and as yet haven't filed my self assessment for 19-20

You cannot use the R40 form.

Your Self Assessment return is for you to declare all taxable income (and tax deducted at source).

The choice is yours as to when to file your 2019:20 Self Assessment return.

oops perhaps I wasnt clear, I'm claiming the tax back on PPI refunds so was told to use the R40 form I asked about the section on employment only because I'm not sure whether I have to complete that part of the form and if I do how to answer the without the details it's asking for... sorry for the confusion.

An R40 is not for someone who needs to complete a Self Assessment return.

The reason for the Self Assessment return is irrelevant, if you are completing one for the tax year you received the statutory interest/compensation then an R40 isn't applicable to you.

If you want to waste your time go ahead but HMRC will no doubt just return it to you and tell you to include the taxable income on your Self Assessment return.

ok it seems I've not been clear at all, I'm completing a R40 form for just PPI tax back not anything else, I know SA is done every year my a/c handles that for me, what I'm doing is completing a form to claim the tax back on PPI only so is it just the section that starts 3.1 onward I complete and leave the rest apart from obviously personal details and declarations, signatures etc
  • You cannot "just" claim tax back on the statutory interest/compensation.

It is just another source  of taxable income which needs to be included on your Self Assessment return.

Oh ok so to clarify as I'm self employed I cannot do it this way only through my SA, the R40 form is only open to PAYE and or other employment statuses, is that correct?
  • Sort of but it is not really anything to do with being self employed

The R40 is for those people who don't need to complete a Self Assessment return.
