Moving home and being mortgage free

Options
Hi, currently looking at moving out of London, which will mean being able to sell our house and buy another and pay off the remainder of the mortgage.
But will mean I will lose my job and will will only be getting roughly £700pm from my wife's self employed job.
We have two children (7,8), I was considering being a house husband for a while and according to entitledto we would get just over a thousand in UC.
Having never claimed benefits before this seems like an awful lot (would mean the household income would be around £1700).
Have I miscalculated something or does this seem about right?

Having done a quick calculation your figures appear correct.
There are a couple of things that you ought to consider.  First of all you and your partner will each be subject to a claimant commitment.  This means, for you, that you would be expected to look for work. your childcare responsibilities should be taken into account.  If you google UC claimant commitments you should find out more specific information.
The second thing, and more importantly, is the possibility of your being subject to a sanction because you have left your previous job voluntarily.  You would have to show 'good reason' for doing so - i.e not specifically to be a burden on the tax payer.

I am also presuming that you will be mortgage free in your new house.
Hope this is useful - it does, at least, give you some things to think through.
