Searches on credit file

Options
I was just checking my credit score and there have been 5 searches by insurance companies this week. I'm a bit worried by this as I've not applied for insurance or any form of finance. This hasn't happened before, why would these suddenly appear, I'm worried about fraud, is someone using my details.

Have you used a comparison site in the past?

Were these soft searches or hard searches? If you've used something like 'go compare' or another similar comparison website - you'll have given them and their associated listings permission to access your file routinely to offer you new products. It may be you last looked a year ago, and as you have an expected renewal coming up, they've all done a quick look before sending you a quote for whatever insurance it was you last checked for.

They were soft searches and I have used comparison sites in the past. My car insurance renewal is in February though and I have been with the same company for a few years. I still think it's strange but I guess there is nothing you can do about it.

At some point you've given permission for credit searches to be undertaken "from time to time" - as long as they are not hard searches then they are fine. If you're that annoyed by it you can write to the companies concerned to revoke that permission, but if you plan to use comparison sites again in future then you're going to have the same problem again down the line.
