SNEAKY SELLERS- PURCHASES DEFAULTING TO "SUBSCRIPTIONS"

I have to rant about sellers being sneaky about deafaulting to subscriptions as opposed to the single purchase you want to make. Cleverly hidden by lots of of textual foliage causing distractions so that you miss that wee circle selected that you wish a subscription of the product again by month or week etc. I've always thought about myself being purchase savvy but the company "Skinny Food Co. Have now foiled me twice. It's only when the products drop through the door again that you realise the money has been taken from your account. I argued with them the last time but they basically said it was my responsibility to "manage" my subscriptions. Much to my anger it's happened again. Normally I would not shop there but they have zero sugar sauces which I use for my low carb diet. You have to go into the Maze and layers of underbelly faff to switch this off. I thought I had made sure that i did not have this selected for all of my products ordered but "Oops I did it again". One small product and a disproportionate postage cost.

I've noticed other online retailers now adopting this approach in the hope they catch folk out. This would be the only intention of this otherwise the wee circle selected would order the single item you wanted. I want to know if there are others who have been hoodwinked by this sneaky, fly behaviour. I say it's about time we start rattling the cage to say that this is unnacceptable practice. Even more so during lockdown when finances are more than tight. Is there a way to require retailers that single purchase is the default unless you select otherwise. These details are so well hidden it's only after the fact when you have taken the hit you notice. Skinny Food refuse to do anything about it and no refund. Anyone else affected by this.

If you mean this site. https://theskinnyfoodco.com/products/notguilty-syrup-bundle?_pos=2&_sid=06efa1717&_ss=r  Then I can’t see how you can possibly miss the difference between a one off order and a subscription, you actually have to choose which you want.
The choices are a one off purchase or a subscription - that shows a slightly lower price but clearly states it is a subscription.

Agreed, to me it is fairly easy to spot, but maybe a bit naughty that the default option is 'subscription'
I've noticed Amazon have started doing this sometimes too, but for me, the advantages I get from Amazon are worth having to double check now and again.

  • When you are ordering from a small screen on an iphone it is not that obvious. The sneaky bit about it was that there was not previously an option to be selected. This is a recent thing, so I had no idea you had to select it. It just says add to basket and then you end up going onto the next item. I bet I'm not the only one who has missed this. I feel that it should be a bit like cookies pop ups where you are required to select that you have read the notified change.  And yes, when Amazon started doing this I was caught out. It's not obvious enough.

Was it the same site that Soolin posted? I just tried on my phone & it was obvious and not sneaky at all.

Or do you think that all shopping sites should have popup every time they change something?
