Travel and / or medical insurance - 6 months in USA

My son is going to college for 6 months in Sept. He will be studying and playing basketball
Im aware that travel insurance will not cover anything coronavirus as he is travelling against FCO advice.
I have a quote from a UK company for travel insurance which confirmed it covers the basketball playing.
I also have a quote from a US company that the college has recommended for medical insurance. They have confirmed it will cover coronavirus.
My question is do I NEED both? It will cost just under £900 for both and I suppose answering my own question in that I would rather pay that than pay the huge bill that could exist if worst case he was to get coronavirus and be ill.
Is there anything else I need to be looking for? Im presuming if coronavirus wasnt around I could just have travel insurance?
Im really confused.
Thanks for any help you can offer

You have to read both policies carefully and see whethr there is any cover that you want that is provided by one of them but not the other. If so, then I suggest speaking with the travel insurance provider and asking them if they could reduce the premium by deleting any cover that you would not need (because it was provided by the US company).

You need to check as the whole travel insurance policy may be void if he is travelling against FCO advice not just coronavirus cover.

Possibly a more pressing question is whether or not he will be able to travel to the USA at all. I believe there is currently a ban on all travel to the USA for residents of the UK and EU. Imposed by the US government.
