Airing hour : my son was at university and shared a house with three others, twice a week it didnt matter what the weather was like outside, all doors and windows were opened and left open for a whole hour. This was instigated by one housemate who had been brought up that way. He sat himself on the stairs with his laptop for the hour whilst the fresh air did its job.
For student accommodation with four lads it did seem to work well.
I'm not keen at all on the use of plug ins, they always seem to make me cough and give me a headache.

While I have been working from home I have had all of the windows in the house and the patio doors open for the majority of the day. Can't stand a stuffy house with stale air.

Even in the depths of winter one of our kitchen windows and our bedroom windows will be open throughout.
  • Whether essential oils, or the plug-in kind, or the reed diffuser type, many of these scents contain limonene, which in itself is naturally derived and you'll find it in cleaning products etc, but in aerosol form, turns nasty very quickly.  There's also the issue that a number of these don't agree with pets - limonene in particular can kill cats.  My main source for this was a documentary some years ago, but this article touches on effects on pets: http://www.mpcoftexas.com/public/Five_Essential_Oils_You_Want_To_Avoid_In_Pets.cfm
If the OP is particularly worried about smells, perhaps some discreet positioning of cat litter in every room - whether the op is a cat owner or not! - might be the answer?
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.
  • I have a lampe berger air purifier/fragrance (alcohol based so no harmful toxins or chemicals) we stayed at the Disneyland Hotel in Disneyland Paris and wanted to re-create the scent at home and research led me to this.

I find it easy to use, light for 2 mins, blow out,  leave to ...errrm...do it's thing?!?, for 20/30 mins, cap off, or transport to another room for another 20/30 mins etc etc.(I'm too tight to buy more lamps hehe)

The scent definitely covers any other previous smells and stays for a good day or 2 without needing to do again (I have a dog so might even last longer if she wasn't such a stinkerella!)  The only thing is, it ain't cheap, but having had every other form of room smelly going I find this is, by a mile, the most effective.

    Are they any good?
We don't have a particularly smelly house and nobody smokes but I've been thinking about getting some sort of diffuser for a while.

Downside is that they cost money to run.
Upside is that it may create nice smells, which we can change.

    Any thoughts on these?
The niceness of the smell created is a matter of opinion!
Ive always found the smells created to be very over powering , i prefer burning a scented candle, i like the flickering and the smell is more subtle
