Is anything being done about NHS dentistry?

  • I did wonder what health problems there are with having teeth removed,
Tooth loss can lead to deterioration of the gums and surrounding teeth, it can cause issues with chewing and saliva production, it can also lead to bone loss in the jaw.

Its not something that should be taken lightly and its not something that dentists should be offering as a 'quick fix' because its cheaper or easier for them.
  • Oh wow. Can I ask what it's like at the moment? Have you had a tiny bit of tooth for 17 years? I had an implant put in (when I had more money!) so I've had a tiny nubbin poking out my jaw but now the gum has receeded quite a lot and I'm worried it's going to be too far gone soon to put a crown on top.
A NHS dentist will not touch an implant and they cannot put a crown on top of an implant . Implant maintainance and restoration is purely private.

The Tories have always hated the NHS and they will be trying to use COVID19 as an excuse to privatise as much as possible. Dentistry is now really slow with all the restrictions. NHS dentists will be more disillusioned than ever. As dentists privatise they will treat less patients. Look at all the work celebs have these days. They'll be implanting, veneering, whitening etc for the rich. The poor will have no dentistry.

It isn’t so clear cut. NHS dentists were paid throughout lockdown, private dentists had little income.

Someone in my family has been waiting month after month for another scheduled operation. The way the NHS is run is truly shocking. How can you have Drs working from home? It's unbelievable this service keeps getting praise. Very poorly run.
Unless you've an answer to Covid. It's just another thing that we've got to learn to adapt too. This is the new norm. Not anybody's fault.
Tell that to the cancer patients who are having their treatment delayed because of this. As well as GP appointments by phone. How can GPs do this? We do not need to adapt at all. All this what they're doing is much, much worse than Covid. It's been one huge over reaction
Comments like this are truly depressing. Armchair experts abound these days.

It’s poor management, imo. It is not better to die from cancer than COVID.
    Dentists don't treat cancer...........

Stick to Facebook if you want a political discussion. More important things in life at the current time than hearing the same old nonsense rubbish spouted.

I have just had some excellent private dentistry. Not cheap though. I asked him about his income during COVID. No problems as people kept paying Denplan. I thought Denplan would have kept the cash. Obviously not. The first time I met him I asked him about NHS dentistry. Too rushed. In his private practice he sees half the patients but charges them twice the NHS fee. So overall capacity is less when dentists go private. Result - poor are left with no treatment.

Absolutely, they have a huge role in early detection of oral cancers, a regular check up at the dentist can mean the difference between treatable and not.
