Stolen bank card

Hi all I'm new here so please bear with me.
My 81 year young mum had her purse stolen last week. We cancelled the card but not before the culprits got away with 4 transactions 2 of £100 and 2 if £150 making a total of £500 withdrawn from different cash points, all money withdrawn within 3 minutes! The co-op Bank are refusing to to give my mum the stolen money as they said she must have left  her pin number in her purse (which she definitely did NOT). To add insult to injury they asked her if I (her daughter) had taken her purse without her knowing!!! I'm furious and my poor mum is £500 out of pocket. Please can anyone give me some advice. I've spoken to the financial ombudsman and I have to give the co-op bank 15 working days to get back in touch with mum. It's all been very demoralising and upsetting for my mum 🥺

The only way to get cash from a cash point is with a pub number that is why the bank is refusing to refund.
If your mum didn't leave her pin number in there then someone must of watched her enter her pin somewhere

How did they use the card to withdraw money without the PIN?
  • Yes we've been told this before and mum didn't go to the cashpoint. I know card details can be put into new cards and both myself and the police suspect this is what's happened.
  • Just found this in the net.....

Bank customers who have had thousands of pounds stolen from their accounts have been refused compensation on the basis they did not safeguard their Pin – even though it can be easily bypassed by fraudsters.

Criminals can override a Pin by stealing a debit card, making a copy of it and overlaying a new Pin number onto the cloned card, termed a 'Yescard'.

But you told us "all money withdrawn within 3 minutes!".

Can they do that cloning and visit four cash machines all within three minutes?

That's from an article written in 2007. Things have moved on in the past 13 years.
  • Thanks for your comments. The point I was making is that how is it possible to visit 4 cash points in 3 minutes??? Not possible.
Also waamo can you advise what has changed since 2007? I don't seem to have had anything helpful yet, just critisim!

  • Keith P.  3 minutes, 4 different cash points. Not possible unless there are multiple cards, hence they cloned my mum's.

Just to give you a idea.
This is not criticism, just someone who deals with this type of thing on a daily basis.

Banks can see if the real card & pin was used. As well as UK ATM's will not give cash to a card that is supposed to have a chip, when it not there. Which is what a counterfeit card is..
The police run that story out just to get rid of you and not actually do what they should which is get CCTV and find the thief.

Never been to a supermarket or high street that has a line of 4 or 5 atms all within yards of each other?
Had she been in any shops and entered her pin before the card was stolen? As for the thief to know it, they have either seen it entered it or it was recorded.
Don't take offense when asked if it was a family member, that accounts for a good % of atm fraud.
    Life in the slow lane
  • In Cheltenham I could hit 4 cashpoints in 3 minutes at different banks if I was inclined. So close together.
I'm writing a book on plagiarism. It wasn't my idea.
