Service from the manufacturer

Hi All, I've got a BMW 3 series 2012 model. It came with a 5 year service warranty which ran out in 2017. I've not needed to get a service done since 2017 as no lights have shown indicating one is required. I've had the odd work done on the car such as brake pad replacements, new tyres etc.

Do people think its worth paying the £400-500 odd charge for a service from BMW to maintain my full BMW service history or considering the age of the car, should I just get a service from elsewhere and it doesn't really matter? This was my first BMW so would be good to know if it will help the resell value in the future?

In comparison, Halfords offer a full BMW specific service which is like £150-200 cheaper then my local BMW servicing garage. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Usually car manufacturers recommend having your car serviced once a year. Not always a full service, mine's going for an interim service next week because I don't travel a lot during the year and this year I've travelled even less than ever.

But just because there are no lights on doesn't mean a car doesn't need a service.

My car is a Toyota and the 5 year warranty runs out in December so I'm taking it to a Toyota dealer, which I'm not happy about because it's more expensive. However, the Toyota place told me that it doesn't matter where I get a service done. I'm just taking it to Toyota because then it will have a full 5 year Toyota service record when I come to sell it.

I've been driving a long time and I've learned the hard way that you do not save anything by not having your car serviced annually.

If I were you, and because you have saved yourself quite a  bit of money by not having any service at all for the last three years, I'd take it to the BMW place.

P.S. I wouldn't use Halfords for a service, they don't have a very good reputation for such things . . .  or is it just me?

Have a look on one of the many BMW forums and see if there is a local recommended specialst.

If you've not had it serviced in 3 years I don't think 400 quid is a lot to pay. Also you will not be maintaining a full service history no matter where you take it.

How many miles has it done since the last service? Three years seems a long time even with condition based servicing.

Pity the poor soul who ends up with this.

As I keep saying to my children if you do nothing else get the oil changed every year.

I'd get a service done elsewhere, but to be honest I think someone has slipped up as it should have been serviced since 2017.
Oil should really be changed every year as a bare minimum!

Don't be a car owner that relies on the cars dashboard indicators to get basics done, it will cost you a lot of money to rectify the small things that need doing as the basics; i did this, back in the day, and ohhhhhhhh the consequences 😥😏

As others have said, at the very least get the oil changed, this week !

As for the service, book it in, i can almost guarantee it'll cost you less now than waiting another 6 months to do it, wear and tear takes its toll surprisingly quick.

Thanks everyone. I managed to get the service done today. To be honest, the BMW chap at reception said it was well overdue and its a good thing I bought it in. Job done! :)

Did you ask him why it hadn’t asked you to come in and service it earlier?
