Holiday let for the whole summer

Options
We are considering the possibility, next summer, of decamping for the entire 6-week summer holidays to somewhere like the Lake District. We would have the intention of working for most of it and so would need good broadband, and a decent table to work at etc. What would be the best way of doing this?  Would a standard holiday let company be able to offer any deals, or are there companies that specialise in this sort of thing?

  • Have you thought about an Air bnb? You deal directly with the owners so you can ask more questions.
Many parts of the Lake District have iffy broadband, so you would need to be sure that it would be ok.

Just my opinion as someone who lives in a popular tourist seaside town, but I can't see you getting any discount just because you are booking the whole of the six weeks that holiday lets never have any problem filling anyhow (and many may well already have repeat or postponed bookings for at least some of those weeks already) . If you were talking about off-peak then that might be a different matter. But there's no harm in trying, especially if you are prepared to put down a deposit now.
  • With a FHL, you can't let the property to a tenant for more than 30 days, so that would arrangement would be problematic. For non FHL properties eg staright second homes that are underoccupied, you may have more luck.
  • AirBNB would be best bet imho.
I don't think you could expect a discount though, and would be unreasonable to ask - esp as they could easy book out elsewhere

Everyone is suggesting AirBnB - but just remember it is far cheaper to book direct - how about looking at https://www.facebook.com/groups/bookholidaysdirect

We used to let through Hoseasons and had two long, several months, lets at reduced rates.  Great for us as no changeovers, handovers etc.
So look around and contact the owners.

It's definitely a case of looking around. The most obvious and popular sites on the net will often show the repeat bookings already.
You need to dig deeper and search the wifi signals in the Lakes. Probably the towns. Despite the governments excitement over wifi many rural locations have poor or intermitent wifi or one broadband supplier only.

I am nervous about AirBnb - I have read some horror stories about people being ripped off.  How do I verify that the hosts are genuine?  As for broadband, we are looking at Keswick, which I hope would be ok.

I am currently in an Air BnB apartment and received automatic 10% discount for long stay.

I find Air BnB reliable, look for "superhost". There are other shady owners who advertise their property on multiple sites and if they receive double booking cancel the booking received from cheapest, often at very short notice.

You are unlikely to get superfast broadband in a rental property.
