Can't commute to work-what to do?

If you hope to pass your test in September - taxi seems like a short term option... depending on the time of your shifts you could walk one way (Whichever way isn't dark) and taxi it the other. (or get a foldable bike - taxi one way cycle home?).
I am sure your pay does cover the cost of a taxi - and if you are going to be a regular customer, just makes going to work not really worth it, but in the long term you will still have your job when you do pass your driving test (PS - buying a car, MOT, Tax & insurance isn't cheap either) the taxi service might give a discount.
I live in a rural area - and taxis don't run at night midweek here either - but if you have prebooked them, you will generally be able to get someh
Moped is also a good suggestion

Look on the bright side: Going up the hill on your bike may be an effort, but think just how quickly you will get back home at the end of your shift coming down...No free lunch, and no free laptop6

I'm sure if you were to use your bike you would get fitter and be able to get up the hill. You seem to be making excuses as to why you can't do anything other than get other people to move you around.1

You'll soon adapt to riding up that hill in just a couple of weeks. Stick with it, and you'll be healthier as an added bonus.2

You beat me to it!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)2 -
5 miles = get a bike. Lower the gear for getting up the hill, you will get better over time too. There is little downside to using a bike for that distance.YNWA

If you don’t want (or are unable) to walk or cycle, maybe you could advertise for a new lift and offer to share the costs. There are some people who couldn’t care less about this virus and will happily let you share the car with them. Also, if you’re out in the country, look into any rural transport schemes in your area. Some of those will provide transport for work, especially if it’s only short-term.0

Hi OP
Sorry re harsh comments by some here.
Is it possible to do some public transport and wlak the rest? Bikes I no like as dangerous.
Long term, may want to move or change jobs.
Try to negotiate with the co if possible and ask them for a gace period and during tha that time look for another job that you can easily get to.
I'm not sure if you can ride those eltric scooters on the pavements I find them scary for all but worth consdieirng
Please do not rush into anyhting when you pass your test as loans are expensive - easier way is to move job if poss

It seems as though the OP's employer has already shown flexibility and would reasonably have expected the OP to think up a plan for when the flexibility around shifts was not sustainable. This is evidenced by the OP currently doing an adjusted shift and saying it is not busy enough to keep her occupied. Clearly, being at work on these adjusted shifts is of no benefit to the employer but, it would seem, the employer assesses there is work to be done at the normal working times and therefore the OP is required to revert to this. Difficult for us to really tell as the OP does not say what type of work they do or what type of business.
If the OP carried on at work and "went home because there was nothing to do" or says they are not busy, that can only result in redundancy.
It is only five miles and there must be options the OP can find if they put their mind to it that get then to work sufficiently safely, quickly and affordably.1
