Barclaycard did similiar thing, they shut down/swopped their Mastercards.
I now have two Visa cards with Barclaycard rather than Visa & Mastercard.
Will probably just pee people off in long run.

I really don’t understand why people are that bothered about having one MasterCard and one Visa as opposed to two on the same scheme. I don’t think I have ever come across a retailer that accepted Visa but not MasterCard or visa versa in the UK. The only situation where this is likely to be a problem is if the servers go down for one of them, which I guess happened to Visa a couple of years ago but it’s a very rare occurrence. Understand the need to have an Amex alternative due to acceptance being more limited but with Visa/Mastercard not a problem.

I’d agree I think it’s more when travelling abroad when you encounter the problem.

The answer can be explained by 01/06/2018 & the chaos that ensued. Which you mentioned :)

Was considering phoning NatWest but just found this thread, I have a visa and mastercard and have just received a new mastercard today, so does that mean I have to throw away both my old cards, is the Visa no longer usable?  The covering letter doesn't tell me anything.

Well unless the letter states it is covering both then No. Do not destroy the visa card.

There should be something on the insert that says which card it's replacing, or one of your cards has reached expiry date.

As you have a visa & mastercard. That implies you have 2 accounts. One card will not cover both.

I'm in the process of switching to HSBC and I've just received a Visa debit card.
I'm still waiting for my credit card.

Just to clarify for anyone else.  I phoned Nat West, the new Mastercard replaces both the Visa and Mastercard, which I am told are now invalid and need to be destroyed.   I now have just the one card instead of two.

The credit card is also a Mastercard and it's a Rewards card as well.
Pity I'll never use it as I still get more cashback on my Nationwide Cashback card.
